Always select the highest security rating available for your budget. You can find a CEN grade 6 (highest grade) rated padbar which is made from cast iron alongside a CEN4 rated hasp and staple made from hardened steel. CEN grades or ratings (Central European Norm) refer to independent testing standards for padlocks. To assess comparative security ratings it’s useful to look at the CEN ratings of various products. You will see hasps made from hardened steel, stainless steel and even cast iron. Which hasp and staple material (metal) provides the best security? If the fixed mounting surface is on the left side you want a left handed hasp. If the door that is opening outward is on the left side you want a left handed hasp. If the door is outward opening (where outward is towards the surface the hasp is mounted on): Most padlock hasps are handed meaning depending on how the door opens can decide which hasp model should be used. Padlock hasps help reduce the chance of bolt cutters being able to access the lock and making grinding attacks far harder. Hasps are generally mounted using through bolts or welding preventing easy removal of the hasp. Padlock hasps are made of steel and designed to prevent easy attack of the padlock itself. The hasp also limits access to the bottom of the lock making picking or bumping attacks nearly impossible (the S&G 833/951 use Medeco Biaxial cylinders that may be compromised by skilled attackers). When used, the hasp covers roughly the top 50% of the S&G 833/951 including all of the shackle that is exposed and limits movement of the lock to around 15 degrees in any given direction. Each side of the hasp is mounted so that when the door to be secured is shut, the two sides of the hasp are perfectly inline and ready to be secured with a padlock. Additionally, the unit can be welded on permanently. It has three square holes per side (6 total) to mount the unit using carriage bolts.
